Children’s Film Festival Organizers Expect Over 300
Third Graders In The Historic Malco Theatre

This year, Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute’s “What’s Up Docs? Target’s Films and Fun Brain Field Trip” is sponsored solely by Target Stores, a first time sponsor for the 11th Annual Children’s Film Festival, scheduled Wednesday and Thursday, April 28th and 29th, 2010, for the Lake Hamilton Third Grade classes. Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute will present the festival from 9:00 am until 11:00 am both days at the Historic Malco Theatre at 817 Central Avenue, in the Cultural District of Historic Downtown Hot Springs.
Students will have the opportunity to watch fun, educational and enlightening Documentary films from across the World. Documentaries have become an integral part of education at all levels, throughout history and HSDFI’s goal is to present Documentary films which create passports to open minds.
The HSDFI Children’s Documentary Film Festival includes short, upbeat Documentaries, animation and narrative films from around the World, one of which was made by a ten year old East Indian boy and is one of HSDFI’s all time and diverse favorites. The Documentary films are chosen specifically for younger audiences on diverse topics.
WOW Village and the Hot Springs Behavioral Health Center’s Dr. Shamshad Haroon, (called Dr. H) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and brain scientist with vast experience with UNICEF/WHO
Organizations, will be the guest consultant. Dr. H will be sharing and teaching the students fun ways of learning about the wonders of the brain and the body and how “fun and cool” they are when they work together. “Children of today have so much media stimulation and often children aren’t given information on how the brain and the body have power from all of the media “hype” and over stimulations. We can change that.” Dr. Haroon said.
Additionally, Hot Springs National Park will be screening a short film entitled, “Lost But Found…Safe and Sound” a film produced by the Association of National Park Rangers, to instruct children about the rules of safety when in the outdoors or wilderness areas. Following the film will be a visit from National Park Ranger Gail Sears with HSNP, will introduce the children to the Junior Park Ranger Program of the National Park Service.
Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute volunteers will be on hand to assist with unloading and loading the students from the buses. A Hot Springs Documentary Institute Event Program will be provided for the teachers this year, along with a Documentary film storyboard form and quiz, also with the assistance of a sponsorship from Target.
“This is our 11th year to present the children’s educational documentary film program and we are pleased that the Lake Hamilton third graders of Hot Springs will be helping us create new children’s film and fun model program about understanding their brain and having their own power to excel because of it. Each student will be given small tokens to help them remember what they have learned both from the children’s Documentary films and discussions. Malinda Herr-Chambliss, HSDFI Executive Director said.
“Target’s Films and Fun Field Trip, What’s Up Docs?” will be screening an age-appropriate films for the Lake Hamilton 3rd grade classes along with Fun Learning with your Two Pound Computer, and is another example of community outreach programs held in the Historic Malco Theatre Complex in the Cultural District of Downtown Hot Springs.  To get information on educational or cultural events, you or your
