The Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute needs your help! Come on down to the Malco each Thursday for a documentary at 6pm, and classic or alternative film at 8pm. All donations will go to HSDFI and will support future film and arts programing!
Thursday, July 1
6pm- "City of Visitors" - Not only is this one of my favorite documentaries of all time, but it's also ALL ABOUT HOT SPRINGS!! My goodness, if you haven't seen this go move to Camden already. It will BLOW YOUR MIND!!!
8pm- "Man With a Movie Camera" - One of the first and most original documentaries ever made. The Soviets had it going on in the 1920s, and the face of art and film would be radically different had films like this gotten the attention they deserve. BREATHTAKING.
Upcoming Thursday films include:
Thursday, July 8
6pm- "Historic Bridges of Arkansas" and "The Buffalo Flows" - Two of the best Arkansas documentaries in HSDFI's collection. A must-see if you love your state.
8pm- "Rashomon" - Japanese 1950 classic by Akiro Kurosawa. Routinely noted as on of the most important films ever made. Have you seen it?! If you even any interest at all in film or Japanese culture, you must.

Thursday, July 15
6pm- "Automorphosis" - The film that inspired the making of HSDFI's own art car, made by filmmaker Harrod Blank and artist Ron English. This is one of the coolest and wackiest documentaries of the past decade, NOT on Netflicks or the Internet!!
8pm- "Freaks" - A 1932 horror film cast almost entirely with actual carnival performers. Need I say more??? WEIRD!!
***
Thursday, July 22
6pm- "The Last Freak Show" with "Seven Signs" - AWESOME!!! Seven Signs is directed by JD Wilkes of the Legendary Shack Shakers and is all about the AMERICAN SOUTH! The Last Freak Show was widely regarded as the best short film shown at the 2009 HSDFF.
8pm-
"Plan 9 From Outer Space" - Directed by infamous cult filmmaker, Ed Wood, this has been widely regarded as the WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME! Bela Legosi died while making the movie, and a STUNT DOUBLE filled in! Aliens! Zombies! Horrible acting! YaY!
***
Thursday, July 29
6pm- "Ghost Bird" - A giant woodpecker thought to be extinct is discovered in Brinkley, Arkansas. Or is it? As the town rallies around the fame of this discovery, perhaps hope becomes more relevant than fact. Another WAY COOL Arkansas film!!
8pm- "Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages" - Made in 1922, this Danish "documentary" remains one of the oddest and creepiest cult films ever made. Narrated by William S. Burroughs. WEIRD!!
***
Thursday, August 5
6pm- "Forgetting Dad" - Another pick for one of the top independent docs of the decade. The filmmakers' dad develops amnesia, and rejects the relationship they once had. Both fascinating and heartbreaking, this is why we love CINEMA.
8pm- "Night of the Living Dead" - George Romero's 1968 horror classic. Can you imagine seeing this in the Malco?! Oh! Bring all your squeamiest friends and let's pack the place with screams and chills!
