Jonathan Joiner / Robert Martin
In 1982, an athletic group tries to hold a Gay Olympics, instigating what will ultimately
become a battle at the U.S. Supreme Court and a challenge over the place
of gays and lesbians in American society. The half-hour film reveals the inner
workings of the Supreme Court during one of the most contentious periods in
its 50-year history tackling gay rights issues. Drawing on private correspondence
from within the Court during the Gay Olympics case, the film reveals a Court struggling
over the comparison of discrimination against gays with that toward blacks
— anticipating by more than 20 years a controversial issue that erupted during the
recent battle over California’s Proposition 8.
